Festival fun around the corner in downtown Novato
The Novato Festival of Art, Wine & Music has been a mainstay of the North Bay community for 35 years. What started as a small street festival organized by a few volunteers has grown into a major musical and social event for the whole family drawing up to 80,000 people with more than 200 vendors, food booths, fine ales and wine tasting. This year’s event is the weekend of June 9 and 10 in downtown Novato on Grant Avenue, between Redwood Boulevard and Seventh Street, anchored by two main stages.
Presented by the Novato Chamber of Commerce and produced by Eckerstrom Productions, the free festival includes typical festival activities as well as new surprises around each corner. The fun begins both days at 10 a.m., culminating on Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 6 p.m.
Of course there is a wide selection of wine and microbrews, as well as a large array of festival food from the popular teriyaki chicken kebobs and corn dogs to crepes and mini donuts.
The festival has something for everyone. The tots love rolling around in giant inflatable balls on the water, getting their faces painted, and climbing in the bounce houses and the giant pirate ship. The Kids Zone is presented by Novato Pediatric Dentistry.
Shoppers find gifts for their kids and pets, as well as fun, funky, charming and eclectic decorations for their homes including pottery, sculptures, art posters, metal signs, and photography featuring Northern California landmarks. Toe rings, earrings and other jewelry are also high on the priority list for shoppers.
The festivals musical line-up features the best of local tribute bands, as well as many up and coming local musicians, singing original tunes, and line-ups that perform all over the country. The Redwood Stage, sponsored by Hennessy Funds, features Wonderbread 5, Petty Theft, Illeagles, Incendio, Pop Ficton, Jeffrey Halford & The Healers, Metalshop and more. The Hopmonk Tavern Stage returns at Seventh Street, featuring many of the entertainers that perform in Hopmonk’s popular Novato and other clubs. Some of the acts include Con Brio, Birds of Chicago, Robbie Fulks, the Mad Hannans featuring Jerry Hannan and Diego’s Umbrella. A full entertainment schedule will be at the event stages, in the program available where tickets are sold, or online at the event website and on Facebook.
