Philadelphia-born Shirley Scott was raised in a musical household, playing piano and trumpet before switching to Hammond organ in the 1950s during the rise of the instrument’s popularity. Blending the sounds of bebop with gospel and soul, Scott made her earliest recordings with saxophone legend Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis and future husband Stanley Turrentine, and debuted as a leader with her 1958 Prestige trio album Great Scott. For this funky matinee program, we are pleased to honor the Queen of the Organ with a cast of Bay Area favorites, including saxophonist Kasey Knudsen and organ powerhouse Sundra Manning!
