Ron and Natalie Daise from South Carolina are writers, actors, educators, and internationally renowned TV performers. They have presented storytelling, music, history, and lectures about Gullah heritage, faith, and creativity at museums, theaters, conferences, and educational institutions across the country. From 1994-1998 Ron and Natalie Daise starred in Nick Jr.’s award-winning “Gullah Gullah Island.” They were nominees for two NAACP Image Awards and a Daytime Emmy Award. Ron and Natalie are recipients of the South Carolina Order of the Palmetto, the state’s highest honor, and a State of Carolina Folk Heritage Award, given for lifetime achievement and excellence in folk art that has enriched the lives of people in their community and state.
Richard Adrianowicz’s interest in traditional music began in the early 70s when he moved from Chicago to California. He was part of several groups in the San Francisco Bay Area, including “Out of the Rain.” Richard is one of the regular singers at the monthly chantey sings at San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park, and he has performed at the park’s annual Festival of the Sea and at park-sponsored evening concerts. He has performed solo at the Chicago Maritime Festival. In 2002, he released “Time Ashore is Over,” a CD featuring a chorus of singers from Hyde Street Pier.
Peter Kasin, raised in Berkeley, CA., took a strong interest in sea music after having first attended one of the monthly chantey sings in late 1989. In addition to singing, he plays fiddle at Irish sessions and in the San Francisco Scottish Fiddlers. For the past 28 years, Peter has organized sea music events at San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park. Peter and Richard teamed up as a performing duo in 2003, have recorded four CDs of sea music together, and have performed at venues in the Bay Area, at the Northwest Folklife Festival in Seattle, and at the Mystic Seaport Sea Music Festival in Connecticut.
