How to Forge Back into the REEL World!

What one film and Young Actors’ Theatre Camp is doing to insure campers have a FABULOUS transition back into camp life!

CampYATC Director Shawn Ryan takes his job, “maybe too seriously”, in his words. “We started Camp 21 years ago to be able to provide a safe and supportive environment for young artists to be able to discover and develop their skills in the performing arts. And now, we find that the emotional care and support that we give our campers is even more important. We love that kids are taking the brave leaps back into the real world and we find that arts exploration is the perfect way to do that.”

And over the years, YATC has welcomed over 10,000 campers through their doors! These hallowed halls of CampYATC were once home to now Tony Award Winner, Ari’el Stachel of “The Bands Visit” and current star of “High School Musical: The Musical, The Series”, Julia Lester.

So how do they do it? How are they helping students find their true passion while discovering their authentic selves. Easy : They are just allowing students to be themselves. “We are of the mind set of ‘yes, and…”. So when a student comes to them and says what about a movie about time travelers, but like it’s on a Tuesday? The Directors of the award winning film department, simply say “YES! And…what about…” and then the conversation really takes off.

With so much ‘no’ in the world for the past few years, the staff at CampYATC feels compelled to allow students the freedom to created.

“But post pandemic is different," Ryan explains. “At this juncture, it is our job to make sure that our campers re-enter the arts world in a completely supported manner. From specialized staff trainings with a licensed therapist to be able to provide our campers with grounding techniques should anxious moments arise to hiring the best of the best from Broadway, Film and TV to creating the biggest and best version of CampYATC to date, we know that the kids need and deserve this experience. And we are ecstatic to bring it to them!”

The Young Actors’ Theatre Camp is a multi award winning overnight theatre camp in the Santa Cruz Mountains for students ages 8-18 of all levels and interested in the performing arts, on stage and off, in front of the camera and behind it.
