Steeped in the raw, incantatory funk that emerged in mid-1970s Bamako, the musically verdant capital of Mali, Orchestra Gold is built around the electric frontwoman Mariam Diakite, who absorbed those sounds first-hand growing up in the landlocked West African nation. Celebrating the release of the band’s second album The Old and the New, Orchestra Gold incorporates American rock and psychedelia, Afrobeat and funk into the horn-driven mix. With arrangements by Diakite and guitarist Erich Huffaker, who met each other when he was studying music in Mali, the band features La Misa Negra bassist Yousef Javier, tenor saxophonist Luis Andrade, Malian percussionist Moussa Camara and drummer Aaron Kierbel.
