No musician in the Bay Area has carved out a career path quite like Anita Lofton’s. A protégé of the legendary DJ Page Hodel, she spent her early years as one of the region’s top DJs. Looking for a different kind of action, she helped found the Black girl punk power trio Sistas in the Pit, earning renown as a guitarist with gonzo energy capable of holding down the opening slot on Iggy and the Stooges 2007 reunion tour. But somewhere along the line Lofton decided to unplug and reinvent herself as a folk-inflected singer/songwriter with the stripped down Anita Lofton Project. Conceived as “a bridge between what Black girls are known to do in the music world (sing),” Lofton says, “and what we are capable of doing (composing music, writing lyrics and playing wonderful instruments),” the quintet’s latest incarnation features fiddler Sharon Williams, drummer Maurice Miles, bassist Kevin Lofton and electric guitarist Brian Hill.
