Created by Syrian percussion maestro Faisal Zedan, the Ajyal Music Platform is a vehicle for collaborating with artists from an array of musical idioms. Designed to expand possibilities for Arabic musicians while championing Arabic music traditions, “Ajyal” is an Arabic word that means “generations.” This version of the confab features a diverse and illustrious cast, including Azerbaijan-born Jelaleddin Takesh on the ancient 78-string qanun. Tunisian oud player Ala Kallel descends from a master Arabic classical vocalist, and Moroccan violinist Younes El Maqboul’s traditional conservatory training encompassed classical Arabic repertoire, Turkish music and more. Kuwait-born Palestinian percussionist Louay Dahbour has been a creative force on the Bay Area Middle Eastern music scene since joining Aswat Ensemble in 2007, where his skills on the goblet drum doumbek and frame drums riqq and daf were central to the group’s success.
