Nonverbal and in Spanish with English subtitles A celebration of Spanish-language and Latin American films and stories, MVFF’s ¡Viva el Cine! initiative is also a family affair, as illustrated by this special collection of kid-centric short films from Mexico, Spain, Guatemala, and Colombia. For and about families of all kinds, this multigenerational medley is accessible for both Spanish and English speakers alike. In Annie & Carola: My Best Friend (Annie y Carola. Mi mejor amiga) (Myriam Ballesteros, Spain 2018, 4 min), a highly animated (in both senses of the word) but lonely girl decides to build her own BFF in robot form. The biggest challenge for Gonzalo in 3 Feet (3 pies) (Giselle Geney, Colombia 2018, 14 min) is how to get to school with both his soccer ball and two clean shoes. In the documentary Ari and the Day of the Dead (Andre Hörmann, Germany 2018, 25 min), young Ari prepares for the celebration of her recently deceased grandfather, while the animated Mi abuelita (Giselle Pérez, Guatemala 2019, 2 min) celebrates the joys of cooking tamales with grandma. A brother and sister find a way to support their stressed single mother in Fish (Pez) (Javier Quintas, Spain 2017, 9 min), while an imaginative young girl helps her parents recognize her brother’s unique superpowers in My Brother Luca (Mi hermano Luca) (Carlos Algara & Catalina Serna, Mexico 2019, 9 min). On his eighth birthday, Noel is disappointed that no one recognizes his special costume in Noel (Kike Arroyo, Spain 2018, 12 min), and another young boy tests his mother’s resolve when asking for a very particular piñata for his birthday in The Good Mother (La madre buena) (Sarah Clift, Mexico/UK 2018, 6 min).
