What bird is lighter than a nickel, can fly backwards, and makes a tiny nest out of lichen and spider webs? If you guessed hummingbirds, you’re right! Join us this month as we aim to spy these flying jewels at China Camp. During this month’s bird walk, we hope to spy a true athlete, the rufous hummingbird. These remarkable hummers pass through the Bay Area during their 4,000-mile marathon migration from wintering grounds in Mexico to nesting sites in northern Canada.
As we look for these and other bird species, we’ll review the keys to identifying birds in the field, including flight patterns, body shapes and sizes, songs, and behaviors. We’ll also learn about birding checklists, and how to use field guides, binoculars, and telescopes.
