Duniya Dance and Drum Company presents African Arts Festival, taking place at McLaren Park’s Jerry Garcia Amphitheater on Sunday, October, 16, 2022, and featuring performances by Duniya Dance and Drum Company, Chinyakare Ensemble, Diamano Coura, Feline Finesse, Shabbal Al Sudan, Bongo Sidibe and the TonTons, and others.
Duniya Dance and Drum Company is proud to bring the African Arts Festival to San Francisco’s McLaren Park for the fourth time. African Arts Festival is free to attend and will feature traditional performing arts groups representing different regions of Africa and the African diaspora. Vendors will sell traditional wares such as clothing, instruments, jewelry, and food.
Duniya first presented the festival in 2013 as a street fair in San Francisco’s Mission neighborhood and relocated to McLaren Park in 2016 to accommodate a larger stage and more interactive activities like dance and drum lessons and face-painting for children.
The fourth iteration of the African Arts Festival is returning for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic began. Mainstage performances will start at 11:30 AM with Duniya Dance and Drum Company followed by Feline Finesse at 12:05 PM, Diamano Coura at 12:55 PM, Shabbal Al Sudan at 1:20PM, Chinyakare Ensemble at 2:35 PM, culminating in a special performance from Duniya Dance and Drum Company co-founder and Artistic Director, Bongo Sidibe and the TonTons.
The African Arts Festival is funded by grants from the Hass Foundation, The California Arts Council, Sankofa Fund for Cultural Preservation, Zellerbach Foundation and sponsored by San Francisco AIDS Foundation, Black Mens’ Health Initiative and Rainbow Grocery.
McLaren Park offers free parking and disability access. Free shuttle service will be provided between the festival and the Balboa BART. Visit duniyadance.com for more information.
