OUR 2022 THEME
As we move into a new iteration of Carnaval San Francisco, it is imperative to recognize the road that was paved for us to exist upon. During the emergence of COVID-19, Carnaval SF took the initiative to supplement the Mission and San Francisco community with a plethora of different forms of aid. The whole Carnaval SF team understood the importance of our people and worked in collaboration with the San Francisco Latino Task Force as a response; including the birth of the Mission Food Hub and our first Health and Wellness event. But this act of service wasn’t solely out of duty, but of pure intention, fervor and love for the people that we are humbled to call ours. Our love for our community was displayed as an act of service to our people, creating agency for change, and illuminating the people we strive to support. We continue our work within this iteration to expand upon, and pay respects to all the forms, actions, and colors of love.
Our space as agents for change, equity and collaboration has always been something that we are devoted to here at Carnaval San Francisco. Love for us is an act of service, and we strive in every way to love our community. Our care, support and existence–for ourselves and our community–is a love letter to each one of us, saying we are still here, resisting, speaking up, and still in support of one another. From educating our families with culturally sensitive information about the COVID-19 vaccine; to creating low-barrier vaccination sites, to working with our volunteers so intricately to make sure that our community is fed with the Mission Food Hub; and then feeding their souls with our events through music, dance, and art. As we move into this new season of Carnaval SF, we would like to breathe life and elaborate on all the Colors of Love. Not just the support, not just the agency but the advocation of our people; of all creeds, sexualities, gender identities and abilities. We are nothing without our communities, and we understand that to be true to that statement, we must take the time to truly recognize, appreciate, love, and be inspired by all of who we are.
We display this chapter of Carnaval SF with the observance and recognition of the Muxes of Oaxaca, and of the spectrum of love, and how we exist. The way that the Muxe people live within the balance of culture, community, and how the Zapotec community cherishes them and supports them, is the form of illumination and agency we would like to expand upon going forward with our organization. We form as a kaleidoscope of diversity within our community; our colors, whether they be from our ethnic backgrounds, abilities, neuro-divergences and sexualities; are assets that elevate us, and progress us. From the past to the present, from the too soon gone, to the ones who light the torch anew, we take space to recognize, appreciate, and to love one another.
Con todos los Colores de Amor, with all the colors of love, we begin our next movement.
