Chuseok Festival

  • Asian Art Museum 200 Larkin Street San Francisco, CA, 94102 United States (map)

Chuseok, or “autumn eve” — often called the Korean Thanksgiving — is an annual three-day festival celebrating the end of summer and the autumn harvest, held on the 15th day of the eighth month on the lunar calendar. Traditional elements of Chuseok include paying respect to familial ancestors via seongmyo (visiting ancestral graves), beolcho (tidying the gravesites), and charye (honoring ancestors with formal rituals); it is also an occasion for families to come together to cook and feast. The museum’s Chuseok celebration offers a chance for all to enjoy and take part in this Korean holiday: join us for a fun-filled event featuring K-pop dancers, traditional ancestral rites, and games and hands-on activities for younger visitors.

Family-friendly activities (offered while supplies last):

  • Create customized “Rabbits in the Moon” badges

  • Make Chuseok gift baskets

  • Play matching games with ddeok (Korean rice cake)
