Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service

  • Antioch Senior Center 415 West 2nd Street Antioch, CA, 94509 United States (map)

Join us this Martin Luther King Jr. Day as we spend “a day on, not a day off,” encouraging all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities.

Let’s work together to build a stronger Antioch!

Recap of this year’s Day of Service:
This year’s MLK Day of Service was hosted at two locations: the Antioch Senior Center and Mission Elementary School. Celebrating Mission Elementary’s 50th Anniversary and encouraging a day of intergenerational community service, volunteers of all ages were able to help complete a mural designed by local artist, Herm (@herms_one_art on Instagram). Herm has designed several murals including ones that can be found in Antioch, CA and Pittsburg, CA.

At the Antioch Senior Center, volunteers were able to assist with craft projects, help prepare and serve lunch to the community, and engage in a meaningful discussion with members of our community about Dr. King’s legacy and the ways in which we have benefitted and can continue to improve our community as a result of King’s efforts. Residents of all ages and cultural backgrounds were able to speak their minds and share their experiences with social justice, equity and inclusion in the City of Antioch.

A special thank you to the Antioch Unified School District, AHS Panthers Orchestra, Jack and Jill of America, Jazmin Ridley, and the staff, volunteers, and participants who made this event possible.

A Message to Our Community:
From volunteering your services to engaging in meaningful conversations about social justice, your contributions have left a lasting impact on our local community. This day would not have been possible without the contributions by each of our partners, volunteers, staff, and community members. It is heartening to see several generations in our community come together in the spirit of service and compassion. As we reflect on the teachings of Dr. King, let us carry forward the principles of justice, equality, and love in our daily lives. Everyone’s involvement in this day of service demonstrates that, as a community, we can create positive change when we stand together. Let us extend our compassion and sense of community beyond just one day and continue searching for ways to uplift and service one another as the years go on.
