OMCA Hosts: Hella Juneteenth “The Cookout”

  • Oakland Museum of California 1000 Oak Street Oakland, CA, 94607 United States (map)

Hella Juneteenth, born of the Oakland collective, Hella Creative, emerged in 2020 as a driving force behind the movement that led to Juneteenth’s designation as a national holiday. This year, in collaboration with Last Supper Society, Hella Creative is set to host “The Cookout,” a town-wide celebration, in the OMCA Garden.

Cookouts hold significant cultural significance within the Black American experience, serving as pillars of community, cuisine, and celebration. At OMCA, “The Cookout” will feature the Bay Area’s finest Black chefs and Black-owned restaurants collaborating on a special Cookout Plate, showcasing classic dishes and backyard favorites curated by Last Supper Society and chef Michele McQueen of Town Fare.

“The Cookout” invites the community to indulge in delectable cuisine prepared by beloved Black chefs and restaurants, revel in live music, partake in games, and engage in activities paying homage to Black culture and freedom. Attendees can groove to music spun by an all-star lineup of local DJs, playing cookout classics and inspiring movement on the dance floor. From the electric slide to the two-step and line dance challenges, there’s something for everyone to enjoy!

Hella Juneteenth promises a day filled with backyard fun and excitement for the entire family. In addition to culinary delights and music, attendees can engage in lawn games, card tables, and explore art from emerging Black artists scattered throughout OMCA’s picturesque garden. Join us as we come together to celebrate freedom, community, and culture at Hella Juneteenth’s “The Cookout” on June 19 at the OMCA Garden.
