The purpose of the celebration of “Kung Fu Day in Chinatown” is to organize a community event that promotes Chinatown’s small businesses, deep history, and live culture by attracting new visitors to our festive community; welcome old visitors who have not been to Chinatown for a long time; and unify the community by offering community involvement.
Specifically, this event is a cultural learning experience where people can learn about the cultural significance and impact of Kung Fu or Chinese Martial Arts. Kung Fu is not only a form of self-defense but a form of performative arts which includes dance, theatrical performances, and Chinese Opera. This event will provide an in-depth learning experience to Chinatown visitors and locals of the health maintenance and community-building skills offered by the Kung Fu lifestyle. Our goal is to attract more people by teaching the community and its visitors about the cultural significance and impact of Kung Fu and Chinese Martial Arts, to add 30% of revenue to the businesses by providing visitors and returning shoppers a festive environment to enjoy, and to teach the cultural impacts of Kung Fu in history, media, and film.
The objective is to bring a festive environment to San Francisco’s Chinatown, especially as the community and its businesses recover from the detrimental effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Many businesses on Grant Avenue (the main street for Chinatown’s retail businesses) have been closed down since the beginning of the pandemic. Not only will these festivities bring visitors back to the community and its businesses, it will also be a cultural learning experience for all.
Performers will be showcasing Kung Fu performances by various Martial Arts groups, athletic associations, and Martial Arts schools. Singers and instrumental performances will be on stage. Visitors will have a chance to participate in basic Kung Fu lessons. Games and activities will be provided for children Panel Discussions with Kung Fu masters and teachers will discuss the health and exercise benefits of practicing Kung Fu, as well as the lessons of Filial Piety (respect of elders), self-determination, self-discipline, and community building. Experts will also discuss the impact of Kung Fu in entertainment and media.
