Cate Hayman, takes center stage as the Fandango Ballroom dime-a-dance girl Charity Hope Valentine in the hit show "Sweet Charity" at the Throckmorton Theatre in Mill Valley. Some of Cate's most notable accolades include the Young Arts winner for theatre, Presidential Scholar in the Arts nominee, "Inspiration" Award winner for the Michael Feinstein Great American Songbook Competition, and a Finalist in the Hal Leonard Vocal Competition. If you could see her now, you better, because this talented lady is destined to be a star.
For those who may not already know, what is Sweet Charity about?
"Sweet Charity" is a story of a dance hall hostess who dreams of finding love and living a respectable life outside of the ballroom.
Who is Charity Hope Valentine?
Despite her rather x-rated profession, Charity Hope Valentine is a light hearted, curious, and extremely generous character who is hopeful to escape her life as a dance hall hostess and find love.
The musical has been around in one form or another for about 40 years. Has this latest revival been updated at all?
Donna Cerio, our choreographer, was a performer on the national tour of Sweet Charity, so her connection with the material is in depth and personal. What she is focusing on is bringing that experience and professionalism to a new generation of performers.
This really is a big song and dance show. Do you have a favorite?
I personally like all of the dance numbers. Donna has such an eye for choreography and really knows how to bring the story to life through her dances. However, I do have a special place in my heart for the "Rich Man's Frug," despite that I am not in it. It is a dance number that takes place in the Pompeii club, an exclusive club only for extremely wealthy aristocrats and stars.
When did you start dancing and singing?
I started singing when I was five years old and I have been singing ever since!! However, it was only in about seventh grade when I started taking voice lessons. I have been taking ballet and Broadway Dance with (the incomparable) Donna Cerio when I was about thirteen years.
Can you give me your best 30 second Tony Award speech?
WOW! WOW! WOW! I'd like to thank all of my mentors who have helped me get to where I am; Suzanne Darley, Craig Slaight, and Donna Cerio. Your passion and mentoriship has fueled me to strive for such greatness. Also, a big fat thanks to my parents because they fund my art. Also, if any of you are going to be at the after party, bring me a puppy and some mint chocolate chip ice cream and really make this a day to remember ;)
