Unleash Your Inner Scientist at The Bay Area Science Festival

The Annual Bay Area Science Festival returns October 26 – November 11 bringing a wide range of family friendly science & technology activities at a variety of locations throughout the Bay Area.

Bring your budding scientists to these awesome events and introduce your kids to a wide range of future opportunities in science. Parents - feel more confident about supporting your kids’ interests in science. Teachers - check out the new resources to get students thinking about science outside of the classroom. DISCOVERY DAYS

Discovery Days brings the fun and excitement of science to a huge crowd. In conjunction with local science outreach groups, Discovery Days hosts over 200 hands-on-activities, dozens of exhibits, numerous performances, and family-oriented science entertainment. Attendees are families generally with children aged 0-14, with a special emphasis on those who traditionally do not have access to quality science education resources. Discovery Day at AT&T Park

Saturday, November 3rd, 2018

11 AM-4:30 PM

This FREE event is unlike any other – with dynamic demonstrations, engaging experiments, geeky games and astounding activities for all ages! This super-charged, super-fun celebration will include hundreds of hands-on activities, untold opportunities to meet local scientists and engineers, and even the chance to run around the bases! The entire ballpark is packed to the rafters with science content: on the field, at every entry/exit, and every level of the ballpark.

High profile science acts from around the country anchor evening programming during the festival from famous scientists around the world.


EXPLORER DAYS

Each year, there are awesome tours to highlight the scientific wonders of the Bay Area. From hiking along the San Andreas Fault with a geologist or touring a deep sea ocean exploration manufacturing center with marine engineers, each tour highlights local resources with the guidance of a scientists or engineer.


Get the Dirt on UCCE!

October 29 @ 10:00 am - 2:00 pm, Join us a day of science at UCCE Elkus Ranch! Explore our agriculture, nutrition, and environmental education programs through hands-on activities presented by UC Cooperative Extension Advisors, Staff and Program Volunteers, UC Elkus Ranch Environmental Education Center, Half Moon Bay.

  • Learn about pollination, beekeeping, aquatic insects and pests in your house.

  • Sample fresh seasonal produce, learn to use edible herbs, taste some fermented foods and touch a kombucha SCOBY.

  • Make a seed pot and plant a seed. Learn what can go in your compost.

  • Explore local rangeland ecology and learn about the benefits of livestock grazing.

  • Tour Elkus Ranch to meet our animals and visit our gardens.

  • See how mushrooms and termites turn wood into food.

  • Talk to a soil scientist and get the dirt on “dirt!”

  • Activities for both children and adults.


Astrophotography for Everyone

October 28 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm, Advances in recent decades have allowed amateur astronomers to produce deep space and planetary pictures that rival those taken by professional observatories. This presentation by astrophotographer Jay GaBany will provide an overview of off-the-shelf instruments and methods anyone, with perseverance and patience, can use to take amazing astronomical images, Mt. Tamalpais State Park, Mill Valley.
